Meet Kannada sounds and script
Recognise the shape of Kannada writing and read a few useful syllables and words.
By the end, you can
- Recognise that Kannada letters represent syllables built from consonants and vowels.
- Read a small set of high-frequency Kannada words with transliteration support.
One symbol can carry a syllable
Kannada is written from left to right. A consonant normally carries the vowel sound a unless another vowel sign changes it. For example, ಕ is ka, ಕಾ is kaa, and ಕಿ is ki. Start by noticing whole shapes; neat handwriting and speed can come later.

ExamplesWatch the vowel change
The base consonant stays recognisable while a vowel sign is added around it. Learn these as visual families instead of treating each form as an unrelated letter.
ಮ → ಮಾ
ma → maa
the same consonant with a short then long a
ನ → ನೀ
na → nee

Aim for recognition, not perfection
Kannada distinguishes some sounds that English does not. Transliteration is only a guide, so let the Kannada spelling become the stable form you recognise. This course makes no claim that Latin letters capture every pronunciation detail.
What you can keep
- Kannada runs left to right.
- A consonant shape changes when a vowel sign is added.
- You can already recognise ಮನೆ, ಕನ್ನಡ, and ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ.
