Place actions in time

Contrast routine or future actions, actions in progress, and completed actions.

By the end, you can

  • Say that an action usually happens or will happen from context.
  • Distinguish an action in progress from a completed action.

Context does part of the work

Kannada verb forms show both time and the way an action unfolds. The same non-past form can describe a habit or a future action when a time word makes the meaning clear. Learn each pattern with a time marker instead of matching it to one English tense name.

Helpful time words

Words

ಈಗeeganow
ನಾಳೆnaaletomorrow
ನಿನ್ನೆninneyesterday
ಈಗಾಗಲೇeegaagalealready
Pattern

Three views of one action

ಮಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ → ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ → ಮಾಡಿದೆ

ಮಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ is non-past: “I do” or “I will do,” depending on context. ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ focuses on an action in progress: “I am doing.” ಮಾಡಿದೆ presents the action as completed: “I did.”

ನಾನು ಪ್ರತಿದಿನ ವ್ಯಾಯಾಮ ಮಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ.

Naanu pratidina vyaayaama maaduttene.

I exercise every day.

ನಾನು ಈಗ ವ್ಯಾಯಾಮ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ.

Naanu eega vyaayaama maaduttiddene.

I am exercising now.

ನಾನು ನಿನ್ನೆ ವ್ಯಾಯಾಮ ಮಾಡಿದೆ.

Naanu ninne vyaayaama maadide.

I exercised yesterday.

Let the time word guide you

tip

Spoken forms vary

Everyday speech often shortens verb forms, and regional or social usage can differ. These full forms are useful, widely understandable beginner models. Treat forms you hear locally as additional patterns, not as errors.

Try it

Match the action to its time

Choose the form that fits the time word, then read the whole sentence.

01“I work every day.” Use ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡು.

ನಾನು ಪ್ರತಿದಿನ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ. — naanu pratidina kelasa maaduttene.

02“I am working now.”

ನಾನು ಈಗ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ. — naanu eega kelasa maaduttiddene.

03“I worked yesterday.”

ನಾನು ನಿನ್ನೆ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಿದೆ. — naanu ninne kelasa maadide.
